בשביל חברים רבים, ובשורות הנוער החלוצי התנהל אז ויכוח
סוער: הגנה — או הצלה. רוב הנוער נטה להגנה מתוך נימוק
יסודי, שעם השמדת העם אסור לחלוצים לעסוק בהצלת עצמם, אלא
להיחלץ לעזרת העם להגנת חייו וכבודו. דעתם של החברים המבוגרים
היתה, שיש להציל כל שאפשר ושאין ההצלה מבטלת את ההגנה
— לא נתקבלה עליהם. בהתאם לכך החליטו חברי גורדוניה:
חנקה ברנשטיין ושלמה צימרמן, קלמן בלאכאז / שלמה
לרנר, וצבי ברנדס מהשומר־הצעיר, שכבר היו מצויידים בדרכיות
חוץ־לארץ, להשאר במקום והטמינו את דרכיותיהם — האמצעי
האחד להצלתם. על אף זאת נמשכת פעולת ההצלה של הנוער
היהודי. בחורים נשלחים על פי ניירות אריים לעבודה בגרמניה,
אוסטריה וסלובקיה. על התקנת התעודות האריות שקד בולק קוז׳וד
מהנוער־הציוני. חבורתו השיגה גליונות־נייר של פירמות גרמניות
