... The Bund in Bialystok had existed for a long time,
deeply rooted in the Jewish population. It possessed a
glorious history. Once upon a time, when Poland still
belonged to the Czarist empire of Nicholas II, Bialystok
was the headquarters of the central committee of the
then outlawed Bund. The first mass arrest of Bundists
took place there, carried out by the Czarist Ochrana.
Also in Bialystok the first mass strikes of Jewish weav-
