קשה לתאר את הפחד והמורא, שהיו נופלים על כל בני העיר, ערב יום הכיפורים. וביום
התקדש שבת-השבתון. הכול נתקהלו לבתי-הכנסת, רק תינוקות היו נשארים בבית, אפילו
הנוצרים פחדו להסתובב בעיר ביום זה. החרדה הרבה פגה במקצת, בשל מעשה שהיה בימי
מלחמת-העולם הראשונה. ביום הכיפורים של שנת 1915 נכנסו הקוזקים העירה ואילצו את
שלמה פינקלשטיין לפתוח חנותו ואף קנו אצלו מה שקנו. ומשחלפה השנה ולשלמה לא אירע
