בשנת תריט נתקבל לרב בעיר לאכווע ושם שימש בכתר הרבנות עד שנת תרנ"ט. והוריש
את כסא הרבנות לבנו הצעיר ר' איטשה. הרבה שנים היתה תשוקתו עזה לעלות לארצנו הקדושה.
ובשנת תרנ"ט (1899) גזר אומר והוא אז בן 74 להוציא את חפצו לפועל למרות חולשתו שנתגברה.
כל עמל בניו ואוהביו ומעריציו הרבים שחפצו לעצרו מנסיעתו -- עלה בתוהו. ,אם לא עכשיו
אימתי, ועתה הנני בטוח כי ד' הטוב יביאני בשלום למחוז חפצי". היתה תשובתו הקצרה והנמרצת.
וביום ג', ב' לאלול תרנ"ט, נפרד הצדיק מבניו הרבנים והמון מעריציו שנתאספו לקבל את ברכת
פרידתו, אז ראו הנאספים בפעם האחרונה מחזה נפלא; הזקן החלש הזה, אשר כמעט לא קם
ממשכבו התאזר עוז פתאום ביום נסיעתו ורץ כעול ימים לבה"כ ולבתי המדרשות ובחרדת קודש
נפרד מספרי התורה -- וברך את כל הנאספים איש כברכתו וכמשאלות לבו לטובה. בשמחה רבה
ובלב בטוח יצא בשלום לדרכו. והעושה את רצון יראיו הביאו בשלום לירושלים עיר קדשנו
