חײם האכמאן איז געבוירן געװארן אין 1851 אין שטעטל
דראהיטשין (קרית קאברין). זײן פאטער יהודה און מוטער
האבן אים געגעבן א ן עכט ײדישע דערציאונג. װען האכמאן
איז אביםל עלטער געװארן, איז ער אװעקגעפאח לערנען אין
די ליטװישע ישיבות, ווו ער האט געלערנט דעם תלמוד און
זיינע נושאי כלים. דער ױנגער האכמאן האט זיך אבער ניט
צופרידנגעשטעלט מיט די ײדישע לימודים, אים האט גע־
צויגן צו װעלטלעכע ידיעות. עם נעמט ניט קײן לאנגע צייט
און האכמאן יהאט אין 1871 געענדיקט די כערםאנער גימנאזיע.
האכ.מאן באנוגנט זיך ניט מיט די ידיעות װאם ער האט ארוים־
געטראגן פון גי.מנאזיע, ער װיל זיך פארפאלקאמען אין הע־
כערע מאטעמאטישע װיסנשאפטן. ער טרעט ארײן אין מא־
טעמאטישן פאקולטעט פון דער אדעסער אונױוערסיטעט (״גא־
װאראםײסקי אונױוערסיטעט״), און אין 1876 ענדיקט ער דעם
אונױוערםיטעט מיט א גאלדענעם מעדאל פאר א װיסנשאפט־
לכער ארבעט איבער הויכ מאטעמאטיק. האכמאן זעצט פאר
אין זעלבן אונױוערסיטעט זיינע מאטעמאטישע שטודיעס ווו
ער צײגט ארויס גרויסע פײאיקײטן און אנאליטישן שכל. אין
