לשי״ר היה אוהב ומרחם, פקיד נושא משרה
גבוהה בלשכת נציב־הקיסר בלבוב. הוא היה חסיד
שבאומות העולם. בלי שום פניות היה עוזר למשכילים
ותובע את עלבונם מידי רודפיהם הקנאים. לימים
נתמנה כשר־הגליל בטרנופול, והוא שהיה מגן על
שי״ר כל ימי היותו רב בעיר ההיא. ובשעה שהחרימו
את שי״ר בלבוב יצא לתביע את עלבון המשכילים.
בפקודת הממשלה אנוס היה הרב י׳ יעקב אורנשטין
להכריז שוב רע על החרם, ואנסו את הרב שילך וידרוש
בבית הכנסת, שאין כאן לא חרם ולא שמתא, אלא
אדרבא, צריך לנהוג כבוד בשי״ר וחבריו. אמרו, כי
מרוב צער חלה הרב ר׳ יעקב אורנשטין. המשכילים
נצחו את ה״חרם", אך ידם היתה על התחתונה
במלחמתם עם החסידים.Connected nodes
