בתו של הראש ומנהיג ר׳ משה קוקניש, מרת
איידלה היתה יפהפיה ומופלגת בעושר ברוב עיהודי
ועוררה את קנאת השכנים הנוצריים. בלי להסדר של
1710 פלשו חיילים ופקידי בית־הדין לדירתה ומצאו
שם גופת ילד נוצרי שנזרק לשם. ההמון הנוצרי המוסת
רצה להתנפל על היהודים, אולם איידלה, מרצונה
להציל את אחיה ובלי ידיעת הקהלה קבלה על עצמה
את האשמה, ואמרה שרצחה את הילדה. בית־הדין דן
אותה למות. כשפורסם פסק־הדין הודתה העוזרת
הנוצריה שהיא זרקה לבית גברתה את גווית הילד
הנרצח. השופטים הסכימו לבטל את פסק־דינם רק
בתנאי שאיידל תסכים להתנצר. היא סרבה לעשות
