המדיניות הליברלית, התפתחות אמצעי־התחביר
וקשרי המסחר ייחדו ליהודי גליציה מעמד חשוב. בחיי
הכלכלה, ולא רק במסחר ובנקאות, אלא גם בשטח
התעשיה. אמנם רק שכבות מצומצמות הצליחו לשפר
את מצבם הכלכלי. ההמונים שפרנסתם היתה על
מסחר קמעוני, רוכלות, מלאכה ועבודה שכירה נאבקו
קשה על קיומם והיו מוכרחים לנטוש את העיירות
ולחפש מחיה בערים, או בעיר הבירה. בגלל העוני
וקשיי־פרנסה העדיפו רבים לעזוב את גליציה ולהגר
לשאר חבלי אוסטריה או לארצות עבר־לים. בשנים
1870 — 1880 היגרו לוינה, בוקובינה, רומניה והונגריה
ומשנת 1881 והלאה נטה זרם ההגירה לארצות־
הברית. תנועת ההגירה היהודית מגליציה הקיפה
