אחרי שיצא הצו על יצירת הגיטו, הועברו משרדי
הקהילה היהודית מרחוב סטרו־טאנדטנא (שנשאר,
לפי הפקודה החדשה, מחוץ לגבולות הגיטו) אל
הבית בפינת הרחובות יעקב הרמן 15 ו״לוקיטעק״ 2.
מלבד המשרד המרכזי של המועצה היהודית הועבר
לשם גם משרד־השיכון. מחנות של יהודים מוכי־פחד
ומגור היו צובאים על משרד־השיכון ומתחננים לתת
להם פינה כלשהי בגיטו החדש • לפתע הגיחו ממכוניות־
תיהם עשרות קלגסי הס-ס. והגיסטאפו, התפרצו לבין
ההמונים ופרעו בם פרעות. לפי שמועות שנפוצו
בעיר, היתה זאת "פעולת תגמול" על מקרה שאירע
בעיר ביום הקודם: יהודי אחד ניסה להגן על עצמו
בפני איזה פקיד גרמני, ותוך כדי־כך פצעו או הרגו.
ראש המועצה היהודית לא היה אותה שעה בבנין
הקהילה, כי נחבש ימים אחדים קודם־לכן בבית־הסוהר
שברחוב לונצקי. אמרו בעיר, שד״ר לנדסברג נאסר
בגלל המשא־ומתן החשאי שניהל עם איגודי המחתרת
הפולנית, וכי נאשם בתמיכה כספית בהסתדרויות אלה.
הקצין הגרמני שניהל את האקציה (עדי־ראיה שונים
מוסרים כאן שמות שונים: יש אומרים שהוא אנגלס,
אחרים נוקבים בשם וופקה או גוסטב וילהויז) שלח
מכונית מיוחדת להביא את ד״ר לנדסברג למקום
השחיטה שבבית המועצה היהודית. בין כה וכה כבר
הספיקו הגרמנים לחטוף ולירות עשרות אנשים ונשים
