ביולי 1914 הוכרז על גיוס כללי והנוער היהודי־ התנדב למלחמה נגד רוסיה — שראו בה מקור לשנאת ישראל. ד״ר ואשיץ פנה בתזכיר אל מפקדת־הצבא בלבוב והציע לה את שירותם של הצופים היהודים לצרכי סיור ואינפורמציה. הוא הוזמן למפקדה ובמו״ם עם הסרן רודולף ברגר הציע לארגן חטיבת־מתנדבים יהודית. המפקדה הסכימה להצעתו והעמידה לרשותו כמדריך את קצין־המלואים ד״ר ליאון רפפורט. ...
