... 35 ד״ר פרנס אמיל. תעשיין, יו״ר הועד הארצי של קרן־היסוד בגליציה. ד״ר אדולף רוטפלד היה מזכיר כללי של הועד הארצי, ועל שניהם הוטלה המשימה מטעם השלטון הגרמני לארגן הנהלה בקהילה היהודית בלבוב. בפעולתו לא נמנע מלעמוד בתוקף על הדרישות להקלת המצב. בתחילה גילו התליינים סבילות מסויימת כלפי "היהודי המחוצף" ד״ר פרנס, שנהג לדבר אתם בקומה זקופה, תוך עמידת כבוד והכרת ערך עצמו. מצדם היתה, כנראה, שיטה של הסואח בדבר. אבל פעם "פקעה סבלנותו" של התליין אנגלם, והוא סטר על לחיו של ד״ר פרנס. מן הרגע ההוא לא פתח ד״ר פרנס את פיו ולא נענה אף בהגה לשאלותיו של איש הגיסטאפו. וכך הלך שותק וגאה לקראת המות, שרצה בו, שביקש אותו, שכן ידע והכיר שנכשל בשליחותו: ביקש להציל ולא הציל. ...
