... בכניסת הרוסים ללבוב עברו מיד כל הפעולות
של "ועד ההצלה" לידי הקהלה, שד״ר יעקב דיאמאנד
עמד בראשה, אחרי שהנשיאות עזבה את העיר. בה,־דש
אוקטובר 1914 נקבעה ועדה מיוחדת בהשתתפות דוד
רובנצאהל, וד״ר ליאו אוארבאך, שהוטל עליה לטפל
בעניני העזרה והסעד. מלבד הפליטים, היה צורך
דחוף לדאוג גם לאוכלוסיה היהודית שנשארה בעיר
בלי אמצעי מחיה ופרנסה. 4.000 משפחות מלבוב
וכ־4000 פליטים מחוץ־לעיר היו זקוקים לעזרה במזון,
הלבשה, רפואות וכר. עשרות בתי־תמחוי נפתחו בעיר,
בהם ניתן אוכל כשר חם ולהם לאלפי יהודים שנעצרו
ע״י הרוסים והיה צורך לדאוג להם. בכל שכבות
האוכלוסיה גבר העוני ורבתה המצוקה. גם התמותה
גדלה בתוצאות ההזנה הלקויה והמחלות. במשך שנה,
מ־1 באוגוסט 1914 עד 1 באוגוסט 1915. עלתה התמותה
בין היהודים פי ! 11 מאשר בשנים שעברו. ...Connected nodes
