... בפעם הראשונה נכנס "שומר ישראל" לזירה הפוליטית, בזמן הבחירות אל הסיים באוקטובר 1869. באספת הבוחרים ב־20 באוקטובר 1869, שהתקיימה ב״היכל הנאורים", המליצו ראשי האגודה (ד״ר מאנש, ד״ר הנריק גוטליב, המטיף ליונשטיין וד״ר שמעון שאף) על מועמדותם של פלוריאן זיאמיאלקובסקי, קארול ווילד ואברהם מיזס (בנו של מאיר־ירחמיאל מיזס). בבחירות נבחר זיאמיאלקובסקי, ומועמד "שומר ישראל", אברהם מיזם, נכשל.

... על יסוד הסעיף הנ״ל ניתנה אפשרות למנות את ד״ר קארו לרב־הקהלה. לפי הסעיף 34 של התקנון נבחרו מבין חברי ״היכל הנאורים״ 30 בוררים ו־9 סגנים, אשר יחד עם חברי מועצת־הקהלה בחרו (39 קולות נגד 15) בד״ר קארו ב־25 במאי 1898 בתור רב־הקהלה.
