הוא למד גם אצל זולצר, ולפי דבריו אף אצל לישט.
בשנים 1840 — 1842 שימש כחזן ב״היכל" מיסודו של
יוסף פרל בטרנופול. משלא הצליח בהכשרת המקהלה,
ניתנו לו כעוזרים יוסף ארנסטי האיטלקי ופולק הגרמני
וכך הוכשרה גם המקהלה לתפקידה. בתור בעל־קורא
נתקבל המורה מיכאל וולף. שמשי ה״טמפל" הראשונים
היו יהודה שמואל קנטור ושלמה בלומנפלד. ביום ו/
18 בספטמבר 1846, חגגו את חנוכת "היכל הנאורים"
במעמד נציגי השלטונות ובחסות משמר צבא. הרב
אברהם כהן נאם אז לאחר דברי הפתיחה של ד״ר
