... בשנת 1806 נתן חופש גמור להירים בעניני
החינוך, וכמובן שבתי״הספר הכלליים הי־ו פתיחים
לפניהם. במקרים מועטים למדו ילדים יהודיים בבתי־
הספר הכלליים: אחד מהם, יצחק ראובן פיקס נתקבל
לגמנסיה וקבל גם רשיון לבקר בה בתלבשתו היהוד־־ת.
הוא היה בן עניים והוריו לא יכלו לקנות לו את מדי
ביודהטפר. היהודים, האמידים לא רצו לתמוך בו
מתוך שנאתם לחינוך החילוני. באוקטובר 1787 פנה
אל הקיסר יוסף 11 בבקשה לעזור לו, בקשתו הועברה
לועדת־הלימודים על־יד חצר־הקיסר והיא אשרה
לו מדי־תלמיד חרשים. יהודים בודדים למדו גם
באוניברסיטה בלבוב. הסטודנטים שלמה וולף ומשה
פוטר קבלו גם סטיפנדיה שנתית מקרן יהודית
(״דאמעסטיקאל פאנד״) בסכום של 50 פל׳ שהועלתה
