... בכניסת הגרמנים ללבוב ניתן האות ל״עולם התחתון" בעיר לערוך את הפוגרום ה״ספונטאני" הראשון — ושלושה ימים רצופים השתולל האספסוף בבתי היהודים. אז נחלץ הרב ר׳ י. לוין, למרות הסכנה המרובה, והלך אל הארכיהגמון האוקראיני, אנדרי שפטיצקי, לבקשו שיוציא כרוז, או שישפיע בדרך אחרת על בני־עמו האוקראינים, שיפסיקו את מעשי השוד והטבח. בדרכו חזרה מארמונו של הארכיהגמון שפטיצקי, נתפס על־ידי האספסוף האוק- ראיני והומת בעינויים קשים. היהודים שהובאו לבית־ הכלא ברחוב קז׳ימירז׳ובסקה, כדי להוציא משם את החללים ולהביאם לקבורה, זיהו את גופת רבם, שהלך בשליחותם ולא חזר.
