הבריגדה של דירלוואנגר היתה מורכבת כולה
פושעים פליליים ששוחררו מבתי־הכלא וממחנות־
הריכוז הגרמניים, בתנאי שיתנדבו לשרת בבריגדה זו.
תפקידה של הבריגדה היה "לחסל" את האוכלוסיה
במקומות בהם נראו אותות התנגדות או מרד. אנשי
הבריגדה היו מומחים לעריכת שחיטות בתושבים,
בנשים ובילדים. לפיכך, נשלחה הבריגדה גם לווארשה
בימי מרד הפולנים בחודשי אוגוסט—אוקטובר 1944 <• 2 ).
