גרודנד. וסוקולקה — שתיהן טבועות בחותם יהודי.
בשתיהן שכנה אוכלוסיה יהודית גדולה. אך מד. רב
ההבדל ביניהן. בעוד שגרודנה יכלה להתפאר ב״יחוס
אבות״, כעיר בעלת־יוחסין ומסורת, — היתה לעומתה.
סוקולקה עיירה קטנה., עיר מחוז לעומת עיר־פלך.
בתקופת הכיבוש הרוסי. לסוקולקה לא היה. כמעט יחוס
עצמי, פרט לעובדה. היחידה. שבעקבות נסיבות פוליטיות
שקמו בתקופת מרד־הפולנים, בזמנו של קושציושקה,
זכתה. סוקולקה לעלות לדרגת עיר־מחוז. לא יצאו ממנה
