לא הבינוהו ולא היה לו עורף צבורי מן החוץ. צנוע
היה האיש בהליכותיו ולא ידע את סוד התעמולה ושיגור
שדרים בעיירות ישראל לרכוש חברים תורמים לישיבתו
כדוגמת ישיבות שנוסדו בימים ההם, הוא לבדו, באין
לו בסיס תקציבי ושיעוריו בכל יום לתלמידים שלא על
מנת לקבל פרס הוגיעוהו בהרבה והיה נאלץ לצמצם
את הישיבה החדשה בסוקולקה. בינתיים נוסדה בלידה
הישיבה הגדולה של הרב י״ו ריינס ברוח הציונית
הדתית, בתכנית משולבת עם לימודי חול. מאידך הוקמה
גם ישיבה גדולה בקרינאק הסמוכה בשם "ענף עץ
חיים", מיסודו של ר׳ זלמן סנדר כהנא־שפירא מבית
הרב מוואלוזין. בישיבה זו התרכזו תלמידים מובחרים
מבוגרי ישיבות קטנות שבסוקולקה והסביבה. ר׳ שמשון
קצנלנבויגן, שעמד יחידי במערכה היה נאלץ לצמצם
ישיבתו בממדים צנועים ולהסתפק בלימוד בביתו, ליד
בית המטבחיים העירוני עם מספר תלמידים מובחרים
גומרי חדרים בסוקולקה, לחנכם ולהכשירם עד שיעברו
