— ליד המחסום בסוקולקה ונפל מן הרכבת ושבר את
חוט־השדרה. שומר הרכבת צלצל לגרמנים ושאל: מה
לעשות עם היהודי ידווקא הגרמנים אמרו: לעזוב
אותו. הוא הלך לבית־החולים ונפגש עם אחיו שאף הוא
נפצע בהתחמקו מן הרכבת. את מנדל שלחו לאושבי ץ
וביצחק ירו וחשבוהו כמת. אבל הוא הצליח לחבוש
במגבת את הפצעים, ופנה אל גוי אחד, גבלינסקי, שנתן
לו חמאה והיה מורח על הפצע, ולאט־לאט התרפא.
כעבור חמשה ימים באו לחפשו, אבל הגוי לא ספר
