הרבי הזקן היה נוסע כמעט שנה שנה למעינות הרחצה
במאריאנבאד (אוסטריה) ולפני עברו את הגבול הגרמני היה לנו
אצלנו (אבי וסבי היו מחסידי חנצ׳ין המקורבים ביותר אליו), ואף
בני הרבי שהתרועעו עם אבי ר׳ אליעזר ברוקנר (נפטר בירושלים
בשנת תרצ״ג) היו מתאכסנים כפעם בפעם בביתנו במונדז׳יוב,
ששכן ממש על הגבול הגרמני האוסטרי, ליד הגשר שעל נהר
פשאמשה ששימש נהר־גבול בין רוסיה וגרמניה מזה ובין רוסיה
לאוסטריה מזה.
חילות הנאצים הכובשים נכנסו לבנדין ביום הרביעי
אחרי פרוץ המלחמה, וכל הקלויזים חדלו להתקיים. אך
חסידי בנדין היו עורכים פגישות בבתי פרטיים, עד לחיסולו
הסופי של הקיבוץ היהודי בבנדין — בין המצרים כ״ט
