הגעתי לבירת זגלמביה — איזור התעשיה של פולין — וצעדִי הראשונים הוליכו לביתו הצנוע של זקן הציונים במקום, ר׳ בריש פרגר, ז״ל. צדיק היה האיש, אחד מל״ו הצדיקים, אחד מל״ו "הציונים" בעולמנו. חולה מסוכן היה ורופאיו אסרו עליו אפילו את הדבור. ואף־על־פי־כן קיבלני מיד בשכבו במיטת חליו, ושעה ארוכה שוחחנו באמצעות פתקאות, שכתב לי בתשובות לפניותי ושאלותי. הסברתי לו את מטרת בואי, והוא התקשר מיד בכתב עם האנשים הדגולים. האחים יעקב וסלומון גוטמן והאחים שיין — מעסקני ועשירי העיר, ודרש מהם לעמוד לעזרתי בכל שאפנה. ...
