העניות המנוולת ! בעיירה חיה מטליא (לאטוטניק באידיש) אחד בשם סאָפליאק. הוא היה
מתפרנס מהעניים, שהיו נועלים נעלים קרועות ובלות והיו מביאים אליו את נעליהם לחדש
את הטלאים. סאַָפליאק זה -- כטיפוס של בעל-המלאכה -- ישב עם משפחתו בפלוש ששכר
מבעל-בית (בבית הזה היה חדר אחד למשפחת הבעלים) והפלוש היה רפת לפרה שעמדה קשורה
בחבל בפינה אחת, ויתר הפינות הושכרו למשפחת סאַפליאק המטליא. הקור היה חודר בחורף
אל הפלוש, אבל הפרה חיממה גם את ילדי סאָפליאק. הוא לא ידע כל ימיו מסרק או סבון,
ומראהו היה כמראה שד משחת; שפמו ושפתיו תמיד רטובים ומלאים טבק -- התענוג היחידי
