בסאן-פרנציסקו. בראש וראשונה יצאתי לשוטט ברחובות כדי למצוא בית מסחר לעתונים יהודיים,
ולדעת מה נשמע בעולמנו היהודי. להיטלטל בדרכים ימים אחדים ללא עתון יהודי ביד -- היה
זה למעלה מכוח אנוש בימים ההם. כשהשגתי עתון
נזדקרה לעיני מיד הידיעה שנוסד לגיון יהודי למען
ארץ-ישראל. אף נימנו שמות המתנדבים הראשונים.
זרם חשמל עבר בגופי והרעיד את עצמותי. ומיד
היתה החלטתי נחושה : להתנדב ללגיון.
כעבור שבועות אחדים הופעתי ברחוב במדי צבא.
לא עשיתי צעד זה מאהבת גבורה או מרדיפת כבוד.
ידעתי גם ידעתי, שמבחינה צבאית אין ערך וחשיבות
מרובה ללגיון, אך גדול ערכו לאין שיעור מבחינה
מוסרית ולאומית.
למרות שמספר החיילים היהודים בכל צבאות
המלחמה היה גדול למדי -- נמצאו אלפי בחורים
שהתנדבו מרצונם הטוב ללגיון מתוך רגש לאומי
טהור.
הלגיון העברי היה גרעין של צבא עממי במלא
