בעטין של הגבלות השלטון וכן בגלל השקפות דתיות, כביכול, לא עסקו יהודים במלאכה
ומשלח יד. אחרי מרד הקוזאקים, כשחלקים שלמים של הארץ נחרבו והורגש מחסור בבעלי-מלאכה,
הורשו היהודים, על-ידי המלך יאן-קאזימיר בשנת 1669, להתארגן ב,צכים". ורק אז החלו היהודים,
שהתרוששו על-ידי מרד הקוזאקים, ללמוד מלאכה. יש לציין שרמת המחיה היתה נמוכה מאוד.
הלבוש היה דל ומגפיים נעלו רק בשבתות ובחורף ואילו, בימות הקיץ -- התהלכו יחפים.
