ביום ג' של חנוכה, בשנה השלישית אחרי ,השריפה הגדולה". וזה דבר השריפות : לפני כמאה
שנים, היו העיירות באיזור פוליסיה מוקפות יערות בראשית, רובם מחטוניים: אורנים, אשוחים,
תורניתות וכו', מיני עץ עשירי זפת. מעצים זפתיים אלה נבנו כל הבתים (הקירות, התקרות
והרצפות); הגגות היו מכוסים שחיפי-עץ אצל האמידים המעטים, ואלומות קש של שיפון אצל
הרוב -- הכול חומר שריפה נוח מאוד. לא עבר אף קיץ אחד, שלא תפרוץ שריפה באחת העיירות.
שריפה שהשמידה את כל העיירה -- אם היתה שריפה גדולה -- או רק חלק הגון ממנה. על
שריפה גדולה היו מכריזים בעיירות הקרובות, וישראל, בני רחמנים, היו ממהרים לאסוף כיכרות
לחם ולשלוח לנשרפים (לפי חקירותי בקהילה אפשר ש,השריפה הגדולה" היתה בשנת
תרכ"ז (1867), אם כי לפי דברי ראש ,הקהל" היתה גם בתרכ"ח שריפה הגונה...).Connected nodes
