... פרוץ המלחמה חזר מאמריקה
שהיה שם הרבה שנים, והתישב בלבוב. את עטו השנון
וכשרונו הברוך הקדיש להגנה על חייו וכבודו של
הקיבוץ היהודי בפולין. מאמריו ומסותיו שנתפרסמו
בפולנית ("עין בעין", "אצילי הגזע הטהור" ועוד),
זכו לפרסום רב ולסערת תגובות בעתונות הפולנית.
השתתף בקביעות גם ב״היינט״. בשנת 1937 קיבל
בקרק תואר ד״ר על חיבורו על אוסקר וויילד. בשנות
הכיבוש הסובייטי (1941 — 1939) תירגם לאידיש את
שיריו של המשורר האוקראיני־סובייטי פבלו טיצינה.
ביולי 1941, עם כניסת הגרמנים ללבוב, עזב אימבר,
שהיה ידוע בפעילותו האנטי־נאצית, את לבוב ויחד
עם אשתו עבר ליז׳רז׳אני, ע״י זלוצוב, מקום מגורי
חותנו. משם עבר לזלוצוב עיר מולדתו והסתתר תחת
השם וייס. יהודי זלוצוב דאגו למשורר בן־עירם,
העסיקוהו בטיפול בחולים בביה״ח היהודי, שגיסו, ד״ר
הרצ׳אניק היה מנהלו. בימים ההם הרבה אימבר לכתב
ואת יצירותיו היה קורא באזני החולים. בנובמבר
1942 הוצא. יחד עם 3000 מיהודי זלוצוב, לבלז׳ץ
