תפקידו סגנו משה רומן, ורק בשנת 1862 נתקבל
כחזן אוסוולד וייס משגדין, למדן ומשכיל. ד״ר
לוונשטיין והחזן וייס הצליחו לרכוש להם אהדה
בצבור המתפללים ב״היכל״. ד״ר לוונשטיין נולד
במינדזירז׳צי, 1821, היה מצאצאי הרב בעל "פני־
יהושע", וקרוב למשפחות הירץ ברנשטיין והוריויץ.
למד באמסטרדם ובהאנובר (בישיבת הרב ר׳ נתן
אדלר, שהיה אח״כ רב בלונדון), באוניברסיטת פראג
ואצל הרב שי״ר, יעקב־יוסף אטינגר ועוד. היה מטיף
ומנהל בית־הספר בליפטו־סט־מיקלוש וכיהן כרב
