במשך שנים לא היה מטיף ב״היכל" במקום הרב
אברהם כהן. המתקדמים נתנו עיניהם בד״ר ליאופולד
לף, רב קהלת שגדי ן בהונגריה, שבא ללבוב ונשא
דרשה והרצאה מדעית בהיכל ובקהלה, אבל לא קבל
את המנוי. בשנת 1857 נתמנה למטיף ד״ר שמעון
(ליאון) שוואבאכר. הוא נולד באוברנסדרוף, וירטנברג,
בשנת 1817. קיבל סמיכות לרבנות וכן תואר ד״ר
לפילוסופיה מטעם אוניברסיטת טיבינגן. כיהן בתור
מטיף בפראג ואח״כ רב ומטיף בהומבורג, שבדין
דדנדסברג. כשבא ללבוב כמועמד למשרת מטיף
ב״היכל", לא הצליח לרכוש לו אהדה בקהלה, בגלל
היהירות שנהג באנשי הקהל, שהיה מקבלם בבגדי־
שרד. גם לחתונות ולהלוויות היה מופיע במדיו, ובזאת
הרגיז את החרדים וכנראה גם את הכמורה הקטולית,
בהופיעו גם בפני הנציב גולוחובסקי במדים שעוררו
את כעסו. אחרי זמן קצר עזב את לבוב ועבר לאודיסה
ונתמנה שם כ״רב מטעם״ ומטיף (1859). בתפקידו
זה כיהן 25 שנה. אך משנערכו הבחירות לרבנות
באודיסה, לפי פקודת סדר הבחירות של הצאר אלכסנדרConnected nodes
