בן הרב בוולוצלבק, ר׳ יוסף חיים קארו (1800 — 1895) ואחיו של ההיסטוריון הידוע פרופ׳ ד״ר יעקב קארו (1835 — 1904). בשנת 1891 נבחר כמטיף ב״היכל הנאורים בלבוב. ברוח מורו, ההיסטוריון פרופ׳ ד״ר צבי גרץ, שדרש מתלמידיו לחקור את קורות הקהלות׳ בהן הם מכהנים כרבנים ומטיפים׳ החליט ד״ר קארו, שכבר לפני בואו ללבוב פרסם את תולדות הקהלת היהודיות בארפור טטצאב׳ להקדיש זמנו לחקר תולדות היהודים בלבוב באופן שיטתי ועל יסוד החומר שבארכיון לבוב. ...
