במחקריו הראשונים: "היהודים בלבוב על־סף
המאה הט״ז והי״ז"׳ (פולנית) שעליו קיבל את הפרסים
של וואוולברג וברצבסקי "הרץ הומברג ובתי־הספר
היוספיניים בגליציה בשנות 1787 — 1806״ (פולנית,
לבוב 1906); "הרובע היהודי בלבוב" (פולנית, לבוב
1906), נראים כבר הקווים היסודיים של שיטתו
המדעית, השונה מדרכי המחקר של ההיסטוריונים
היהודים הנ״ל שראו בתולדות היהודים אך
קורות הרבנים, הדיינים. המוהלים, החזנים ונדן.
דרכו של בלבן שונה גם מטיפוס שני של היסטוריונים,
שנקטו בתולדות היהודים בפולין שיטת־מחקר שהיתה
חדורה אפולוגטיקה או שאיפות התבוללות. היסטוריונים
מסוג זה היו הילארי נוסבאום׳ אלכסנדר קראוסהאר,
ד״ר לודביג גומפלוביץ, שאף הם לא תארו לנו את
