עם פטירתו של הרב ר׳ שאול נתנזון ב־4 במרס
1875, הוכרז מטעם ועד־הקהל המכרז על משרת
הרבנות. הופיעו שני מועמדים: ר׳ יצחק־אהרן אטינגא
חבר ועד־הקהלה, וקרובו ר׳ צבי־הירש אורנשטיין.
יהודי לבוב נתפלגו לשני מחנות. האדוקים דרשו
לבחור בר׳ צבי־הירש אורנשטיין, נכד הגאון ר׳ יעקב־
משולם אורנשטיין, שניהל יחד עם ר׳ יעקב נפתלי הירץ
ברנשטיין (1813—1873) ו1 ב) מלחמה נגד הרב אברהם
כהן. ר׳ צבי־הירש אורנשטיין היה רב בבריסק־דליטא
משנת 1865 עד 1873, שאז הוכרח לעזוב את העיר
כנתי ז ר ונבחר לרב ברישא. במרס 1875 התקיימה
בבית־הכנסת בחוץ־לעיר אספת נכבדי האדוקים בה
החליטו לדרוש את בחירת הר׳ צ״ה אורנשטיין. בקהלה
היתה התנגדות לבחירתו, בגלל מעשה הרעלתו של
הרב כהן 11 ג). המועמד השני, ר׳ אהרן־יצחק אטינגא,
נתמך בעיקר ע״י החסידים, ששנאו את הר׳ צ״ה
