יסוד בית־הספר, בני ה״טמפל״ ומינוי אברהם כהן
העלה את חמתם של האדוקים במידה כזו, שהגישו
ערעור לגוברניון בחתימת מנהיגיהם יוסף הרש
רפפורט, מרדכי זאב אטינגר, יעקב הירץ ברנשטיין,
הרש אורנשטיין, שמואל גולדשטרן ומאיר מינץ.
ביחוד גבר הרוגז בהיוודע להם שהמטיף אברהם כהן
נתמנה רב־הקהלה וישב על כסא הרבנות. עליו ישבו
גאונים כקלמן מוורמס, משולם מזלצבורג, דוד הלוי
בעל "טורי־זהב", "חכם־צבי" צבי־הירש רוזאניש
והאחרון — ר׳ יעקב־משולם אורנשטיין. האדוקים לא
יכלו עוד לשתוק והחליטו לצאת ברמה ולמנוע צעד
זה. בכתב הערעור, שכנראה היה פרי־עטו של מאיר
מינץ, מתואר אברהם כהן כעם־הארץ בתלמוד, שאינו
שומר מצוות ומזלזל בדיני התורה. בעצומה שהיו בה
מאות חתימות, מחו נגד יסוד בית־הספר. הגוברניון
שלח את כתבי־הערעור עם חוות־דעת חיובית של
שר־המחוז מיהלבאכר לשלטונות בוינה, שהעבירו את
