בין הכפר "סקאלה הישנה" לבין העיירה השוכנת על ההר
נובעים מעיינות מים חיים, המובלים ע״י שואבי המים,
ה״וואסערפירערס" לעיירה, כל אחד לאזור שלו. שלנו הוא מוטיה
הזקן, ואח״כ יענקל ולבסוף מוישה. סוסיהם הרזים והרעבים
מושכים את החביות הענקיות מלאות המים ואילו הם, בעליהם,
תומכים בהן ומשמיעים ללא הרף: "הייטא, וויסטא, וויו"("ימינה,
שמאלה, קדימה" ־ שפת "הדיבור" של האיכרים לסוסיהם),
ומאיצים בבהמות הנכנעות לעשות מאמץ נוסף. מעל להמולת
הרחוב, עולה ניגונם הבלתי נלאה וקריאותיהם״מים טריים, מים
טובים. היו אלה טיפוסים יהודיים מיוחדים במינם, ובעיקר הם
בלטו לעין בחורף כאשר הקור המקפיא יורד ל־20 מעלות ולמטה
מזה. מי ישכח את ה״ואסערפירער" המכורבל בעל כובע הפרווה
הגבוה, כשצווארו עטוף סודר ולעתים כרוך בסמרטוט מכוסה זיזי
קרח וכפור העוטים את אפו ושפתיו? על ידיהם כפפות רטובות בלי
בתי אצבעות ועל מגפי הלבד ערדליים ענקיים קלועים מקש. חבית
העץ ודליי העץ מכוסים קרח ומקושטים בזיזים, אשר דמו ליצירות
בדולח אמנותיות המשקפות קרני השמש החורפית ואילו
