דאגה קשה ועול חומרי כבד נוסף הוטלו על כתפיהם של בני המשפחות שנפגעו, של העיירה כולה ושל ה״יודנראט", שאמנם הכפיל מאמציו להקל על סבלם של כלואי המחנה לספק צרכיהם המינימאליים ולעודדם, אבל לא היה ביכולתם של כל אלה להושיעם. עזרה רבה וחשובה הושיט שליח ה״יודנראט", חיים ברטלר, אשר שהה ימים, שבועות וחודשים ליד המחנה. הוא היה איש הקשר בין ה״יודנראט " לבין האסירים, העביר להם את המשלוחים, כסף ושאר עזרה, ולפעמים נאלץ גם להשתדל אצל מפקד המחנה האכזרי למען איש אומלל שסכנת מוות היתה צפויה לו. במרוצת הזמן עלה בידי ה״יודנראט " לשחרר או לפחות להחליף אסירים תשושי־כוח בקרוביהם שהתנדבו במקומם, הכל תמורת שלמונים מרובים. לא חסרו תקריות שיצרו מצבים מסוכנים, בהם רק כפשעה היה בין הצלה בדוחק ובין מותם הוודאי של אנשים רבים. באחד הימים ברחו ממחנה עבודה סטופקי שני אסירים מבני עירנו, אב ובנו(למעשה היו פליטים מאחד הכפרים שגורשו לסקאלה) .קרה נס שהתקרית הסתיימה בתשלום כופר ...Source passage 2
