למחבואים אצל הגויים וליער. דממת־מוות ירדה על העיירה.
הבתים הפרוצים פערו חלונותיהם השבורים כחורי עיניים
בגולגלותיהם של שלדים. השוטרים האוקראיניים צמאי הדם,
רובם "בני טובים", תושבי סקאלה, פיטרלו יומם ולילה ברחובות
ובסימטאות העזובות. עזרו להם בחיפושים אחרי המסתתרים,
בריונים, שודדים ורוצחים אוקראיניים וכל אלה קיבלו עידוד
מ״האינטליגנציה" שלהם, ובראשה הכומר דרוויאנקו והרופאה
ד״ר מודנה, אשר הטיפו בארסיות רצחנית להשלמת המלאכה
ולביעור שרידי היהודים עד האחרון שבהם. אל הרוצחים האלה
הצטרפו, אחרים שבאו ממקור בלתי צפוי: כמה אוזבקים, עריקים
מהצבא האדום, שרכשו אמונם של הגרמנים וצורפו בין השאר גם
ל״משמר הגבול״ הסקאלאי. אחד מהם גילה, בקיץ 1943, את
מחבואו של הרופא ד״ר שטוירמאן ומשפחתו מתחת לבית הכנסת
