... סקאלה שכנה על גבעה סלעית, מכותרת בפיתוליו של
הנהר זברוץ׳. לאורך מבואותיה של העיירה נמשכו שדרות עצי ליבנה,
שיטה, אשל, צפצפה, תדהר ואלות לבנות. שדרות אלה היו כעין
המשך ליערות הסמוכים, לחורשות ולביתו המטופח של הרוזן
גולוחובסקי. האתר הקדום ביותר בסקאלה היה המבצר
שחורבותיו—עדים־שרידים מן המלחמות עם הטורקים—הטילו
אימה בקימוריה ההרוסים הפעורים, בפרצותיהן, בבורות עמוקים
ובמרתפים תת־קרקעיים. למרגלות־המבצר, מעברו האחד, הטבול
גני־ירק ופרי־שדות בר, בקתות קטנות־צנועות מסוככות לרוב
