האוכלוסיה של סוקולקה והמחוז היתה מורכבת מגזעים
ואמונות שונים: ליטאים ופולנים, פראבוסלבים, קדרים ־
טטרים ויהודים. הקדרים הגיעו עם גייסות המונגולים
שכבשו את כל השטחים השייכים בזמננו לרוסיה וסין,
ואף במערב אירופה כבשו את פולין והגיעו עד קרוב
לברלין בירת פרוסיה. המונגולים, שנסוגו לארצם אחרי
כל פריצה לרשות זרים, נשארו רבים מהם במדינות שנכבשו
בידי רוסיה, וגם בתחומי ליטא, שתושביה קרובים
למונגולים, קרבת גזע ושפה, הם נקראו בשם "קדרים"
(טטרים), נשארו נאמנים לדתם היו מאמינים במוחמד
