באות התקופה היה מראה עיירתנו בערך כך:
בשטח הגדול והרחב החל מצד בית־המדרש החדש,
וה״אלטע שול", חצר התלמוד תורה, שטיבל של
חסידי קוצק, עד ל״הכנסת אורחים" כל השטח הגדול.
על מאות מתפלליו ותלמידיו מ״התלמוד תורה" לא היה
בו בית־שמוש. ברחובות העיר: ביאליסטוקער, גרודנער
ובשאר הסמטאות לא היו מרצפות ומדרכות והתיש של
שואב־המים (דער וואסער־פירער) היה מתגנב מדי פעם
ועובר במרכז המסחרי, היה חוטף תפוח אצל חנה
רייזל גלגובסקי או מכנים את קרניו בתוך חבית דגים
מלוחים אצל חאשקע פאצטיווע מקבל מכות וחבטות
