... ברחובות בלי פחד ואימה והרגישו את עצמם חפשים.
הצבא הגרמני התיחס ליהודים בידידות, בקרו בבתיהם,
כבדו אותם בלחם, ריבה ושוקולדה, והעיר צהלה. הצבא
הרוסי התבצר על שפת נהר נימן בגרודנה ועירנו
הפכה שוב מחנה צבא גדול. כל העיר מלאה צבא
גרמני, בכל הבתים שוכנו חיילים יחס ם היה אדיב
וטוב. בנגוד לרוסים, אשר שיכנו חיילים בבתי־כנסת
ובבתי־הספר היהודיים, התייחם הצבא הגרמני בכבוד
ולא נגע לרעה במקומות הקדושים. אחרי שגרודנה
ווילנה נכבשו והצבא הגרמני חדר אל השטח הרוסי,
עזבו הגרמנים את סוקולקה ונשאר רק חיל מצב קטן
וז׳נדרמריה גרמנית. מפקד המשטרה הגרמני הקים מש -
טרה אזרחית, רוב ה יהודים וחלק זעיר ממנה נוצרים.
