1*י■ ב־1940, והוא כבן 10, הצליחה משפחתו להגיע לארץ. לא יצא
זמן רב, ויוסף נקלט יפה בחיי הארץ, למד בבית ספר תיכון, התמסר
לספורט והיה פעיל ב״הפועל" ובהגנה. עם הכרזת או״ם ב*19347 יצא
עם הראשונים להגנת שכונת יפו—תל־אביב. עבר קורס מפקדי
כיתות ונשלח לפעולות בחזית הדרום. בשבועות האחרונים לחייו
היה בנגבה. השתתף בהגנת המקום בימי הקרבות הקשים. ובאותם
הימים רשם ביומנו מאורעות יום ויום, בלי לקבול על הקשיים
