המחנה. את האריסטוקרטיה בין הפועלים הוו "זקני־
הפועלים" (לאגער־עלטעסטע)׳ ומנהלי חטיבות־
העבודה (״פארמאך = פועלים ראשיים)׳ בעלי-
המלאכה, המהנדסים׳ הטכנאים והמכונאים שהיו בתוך
פלוגות־החוץ (הטובות ביותר) או בפלוגות העבודה
במחנה. קשה ביותר היה מצבם של הפועלים הבלתי־
מאומנים. עליהם נמנו ע״פ רוב אנשים מחוגי
האינטליגנציה המקצועית: עורכי־דין, פקידים׳ מורים׳
סופרים וכר. רק מעטים מבעלי המקצועות החפשיים
יכלו להסתדר כפקידי־עזר במשרדי המחנה או בתור
בעלי־מלאכה׳ רובם עסק בעבודה השחורה והמפרכת.
כרגיל — ספגו מכות רצח. השוטרים היו לועגים
להם׳ ולפעמים גם חבריהם ה״מומחים" נהגו בהם
חוכא ואטלולא. להם הוקצי מקומות־הלינה הגרועים
ביותר׳ הם היו האחרונים לחלוקת צרכי־המזון, ותנאי
החיים החדשים הפילו רבים מתוכם. הרב ד״ר דוד
כהנא מכפר, על הרבנים שהובאו עמו למחנה,
שכמעט כולם מתו בזמן קצר — ברעב׳ עבודת־פרך,
