והאוקראינים, ביקשו לראשונה את קרבתו והשתדלו
לחסות בצלו. אך נסיונותיו הנחילוהו אכזבות קשות.
בראשית שלטון הגרמנים, בסתיו 1941, קיבל על עצמו
את המשימה לארגן ולנהל את מפעל הסעד לנצרכים
בקהילת־לבוב, שהיו בה אז כ־130,000 נפש. באיסוף
הכספים והמצרכים ובחלוקתם בין הנצרכים העסיק
ד״ר לנדר מורים, סופרים, אמנים ואנשי־רוח. בראשית
ינואר 1943 התחילו הנאצים בחיסול גיטו לבוב, הרגו
כמה מחברי ה״מועצה" (ד״ר אברסון, ד״ר קימלמן
ועוד) וצמצמו את הגיטו במחנה שנקרא "יולאג"
("יודען־לאגר"). ד״ר לנדוי ואשתו הצליחו להתחמק
מן הגיטו ולברוח ל״עבר הארי", אולם נתפסו ע״י
סוכני ה״גיסטאפו" והובאו אל כלא הגיטו. למחרת
הוציאה פלוגת שוטרים אוקראינים את ד״ר לנדר
ואשתו מכלא־הגיטו, הובילום דרך הרחובות הראשיים
של העיר, אל ״גבעת החולות״ — קבר־האחים של
אלפים מיהודי לבוב. ...Connected nodes
