על צמרת האריסטוקרטיה היהודית נמנית משפחת רפפורט, שעמדתה נתבססה לא על עשירות ועסקנות ציבורית, אלא על יחוס אבותיה, הרבנים המפורסמים.
משפחת רפפורט היו שתים: הכהנים, ושאינם־כהנים.
משפחת הכהנים באה ללבוב עוד במאה הי״ז ותפסה עמדות־מפתח בחיי הקהלה. חשיבותה גדלה בימיו של הגאון ר׳ חיים רפפורט. הוא לא היה אהוב על הקהל וסכסוכים פרצו בינו לבין אנשי קהלתו, שהגיעו אפילו לידיעת השלטונות. אולם למדנותו, וביחיד השתתפותו בויכוח עם ה״פראנקיסטים״, בשנת 1759, העלו את כבודו בקרב היהודים והנוצרים כאחד. נכד־אחיו ר׳
בנימין, שהיה רב באולקסוניץ, היה הרופא הידוע בלבוב ד״ר יעקבק רפפורט, ממיסדי ה״היכל". מצאצאי
