How was Skala’s Jewish population destroyed?
Trace the escalating system of forced labor, deportation, ghettos, camps, shootings, and Aktionen described in the memorial book. The path shows how destruction unfolded over time and affected both the community as a whole and named individuals.
How did persecution become mass murder?
Forced labor and deportation
In December 1941, the Skala council selected 50 people for forced labor in Chortkiv, and further quotas were imposed for Borki in February 1942. In April, men were ordered to report in Borshchiv and 84 were taken to a labor camp. The 1942 Aktionen
The memorial book describes arrests, marked Jewish homes, and the Skala action that began at six in the morning on September 26, 1942. Jews were captured, deported, and killed; transports from Skala went to Belzec, where women, elderly people, and children were sent to the extermination camp. The liquidation of the community
The remaining Jews of Skala were deported to Borshchiv for destruction, while other accounts describe a major Aktion that killed more than half the town’s inhabitants. These accounts show that deportation and mass murder dismantled the community’s population, families, and institutions.
