השליט הכל־יכול והמטי ל אימה על ה״יודנראט" ועל כלל
היהודים, היה סרן הרא, סגנו, כביכול, של בראון, אבל למעשה
המפקד האכזרי וחסר הרחמים אשר רצונו קבע את גורלנו לשבט,
ולעולם לא לחסד, בכל תחומי חיינו, כי על המוות ניצחו קלגסי
הגסטאפו ובראשם ה״יודנרפרנט" קלנר. הרא הצטיין קודם כל
כשודד וסחטן חסר כל רגש ומצפון; בהתפרצויות הזעם התכופות
שלו היה מכה באכזריות את קורבנותיו ולפעמים מפעיל את
אקדחו. ידועים לשמצה קצינים אחרים של ה״צולגרנצשוץ", כולם
בדרגת סגן: ארתור אנגל, פייפר וגרוהר. אנגל שלח ידו בשוד רכושם
של היהודים והיה "אורח" קבוע בבתיהם של תושבי העיירה, לרוב
בלווית וילהלם פייפר. בו בזמן שאנגל היה מפעיל גם אגרופיו או
את השוט ומשסה כלביו ביהודים, היה פייפר טיפוס עליז, לא פגע
פיסית באיש; סתם שודד קטן וגנב אשר כל חפץ היה מוצא חן
בעיניו. כל השודדים האלה שקדו תדיר על משלוח הרכוש השדוד
למשפחותיהם בגרמניה. היהודים שעבדו בחצרו של
ה״צולגרנצשוץ", בדיר, באורווה, ברפת, בלול, בשרותים וכעבדים
ושפחות בדירותיהם, היו גם מתקינים ארגזים לאריזת הביזה, והם
