הזה, ולמעשה כל המחוז, הוכרז "יודנריין" ומאז ועד שחרורו על
ידי הצבא הסוביטי במארס 1944, לא יכול עוד שום יהודי, שניצל
מהטבח, להתהלך לאור היום. בתשעת החודשים האלה נלכדו
ונרצחו עוד מאות יהודים שנפלו לידי השוטרים האוקראיניים
ועוזריהם האזרחיים, מי בגילוי מחבואו, מי בחפשו פת לחם
בלילה בשולי הישובים הכפריים, מי ביער — ורבים נרצחו על ידי
הפארטיזאנים האוקראיניים־הפאשיסטיים שהשתייכו לכנופיות
של מנהיגם הידוע לשמצה, סטיפן באנדרה, ואשר מפקדתו אף
שכנה באחת המערות שביערות האזור. סבלם של "יהודי היערות"
הוא פרשה עקובה מדם שתוארה בספר זה על ידי הניצולים. פרשה
