בפרוץ מלחמת העולם הראשונה נפלה אימה גדולה על
יהודי סקאלה, בחששם בפני הסתערות הקוזאקים, אשר רק הנהר
זברוץ הפריד בינם לבין עיירת גבול זו מספר מועט מבין היהודים
האמידים הצליחו להמלט מערבה, למרות האיסור והשמירה מצד
המשטרה האוסטרית. החזית נעה הלוך ושוב ובסוף אוגוסט 1914
נפלה סקאלה בידי הרוסים, אך ללא כיבוש צבאי ישיר אלא תחת
שלטון אזרחי עם הפקידות הרוסית נוצרו יחסים נסבלים, אולם
בקיץ 1915 הוטלה גזירת גירוש על כל היהודים שהתגוררו באזור
הגבול. יהודי סקאלה גורשו לצ׳ורטקוב והמסע הרגלי התנהל
בלווי הקוזאקים שלא חסכו שבטם מהצועדים. בבואם לצ׳ורטקוב
רוכזו בחצרו של הרב ולמחרת הובלו לעיירה קופיצ׳ינצה. כעבור
ימים מספר הורשו לחזור לסקאלה, אולם לאחר שבוע ימים צוו
