... כידוע היו ברודי וטרבופול מרכזים לאוהדי
ההשכלה, וכן היו משכילים שבאו מן השטחים החדשים
מזאמושץ וכר. בלבוב היו קבוצות של משכילים
מסוף המאה הי״ח, אולם השפעתם לא התפשטה מחוץ
לחוגיהם, אלא בתחילת המאה הי״ט.
היהודים האמידים עמדו בקשרים עם הפקידות
הגרמנית, שהיו בה גם אנשים בעלי־השכלה, מורים
ומלומדים. מתוך שלא ידעו פולנית נאלצו להתקרב
אל היהודים, שהאידיש המדוברת בפיהם היתה מובנת
להם במידה רבה. הפקידים נתנו שיעורים בגרמנית
לבני משפחתם של היהודים שעמדו אתם בקשרים,
וראו בכך שליחות נעלה בפעולתם להפצת השפה
