דרשותיו של ד״ר לוונשטיין עוררו עניין רב, וגם
לא־יהודים, ביניהם נציג־הממשלה מנסדורף, באו
לשמוע את נאומיו. הוא היה משמיע דרשותיו לרגלי
מאורעות מיוחדים, כמו ביובל השבעים של ליפמך
צונץ, הספד על שד״ל וכד׳. גם בפתיחת הועידה
הראשונה של קהילות גליציה, בשנת 1878, שהתקיימה
ביוזמת "שומר ישראל", ובועידת "מכבי־אש", ערך
תפילות ב״היכל". התפילות לרגל מאורעות המדינה

מיכרז למשרת המטיף. בין הדרישות מן המועמדים
היתה. ידיעת גרמנית ופולנית. מבין המועמדים הוזמנו
שלושה למבחן: ד״ר שמעון דאנקוביץ׳, ד״ר הרמן
קליגר וד״ר יחזקאל קארו. משלושתם נתקבל כמטיף
ד״ר קארו וגם הפיקוח על לימוד הדת נמסר לידיו.
התואר "רב" שביקש כי יוענק לו, נדחה עד לעריכת
